Dirt separators for boiler systems

With today’s mod-con boilers replacing conventional boilers, dirt separation becomes a critical issue. Entrained dirt is often loosened in the piping system, adding to the impurities already present. Among other negative effects, the dirt can accumulate on the heat exchangers, reducing their heat transfer levels. Caleffi Dirtcal low-velocity zone dirt separators are designed to continuously remove dirt in boiler systems, using compact heat exchangers with very small passageways, such as those found in modern mod-con boilers. Caleffi Dirtcal dirt separators, with specially designed internal media, provide surfaces that assist in separating the dirt particles, guiding them downward into a low-velocity chamber where they settle on the bottom. Conveniently, the particles can then be removed even while the system is in operation. The Dirtcal creates less pressure drop than that of a comparably-sized basket or Y-strainer. It also remains in service for longer periods between cleaning because it secures the collected sediment away from the flow stream. Caleffi’s high-performing Dirtcal separators can remove particles much smaller than those removed through a typical Y-strainer, with Dirtcal separators removing particles as small as 5 microns.
