JANUARY HEATING AND COOLING EQUIPMENT SHIPMENT DATA RELEASED

The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute has released the following information on industry trends for January 2009.

Central Air Conditioners and Air-Source Heat Pumps ‘Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for January totaled 222,419, down 32 percent compared with the same month a year ago. Heat pump shipments for January totaled 91,360, down 29 percent from the same month a year ago. Please note: January 2008 combined monthly shipment total was revised to 326,681 and the heat pump shipments totals for that same month also were revised to 128,277.
Warm Air Furnaces ‘ U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in January totaled 134,370, a 22 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 3,316, a 43 percent drop compared with January 2008 totals.
Storage Water Heaters ‘ Residential electric water heater shipments for January totaled 313,177, an 8 percent drop from the same month a year ago. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 315,861, a 1 percent decrease compared with shipments for the same month last year. Commercial gas water heater shipments for January totaled 6,016, dropping 16 percent compared with the same month last year, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 4,771, an 8 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago.
