AHRI October Heating and Cooling Equipment Shipment Data

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute offers the following equipment sales information for October.

Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for October totaled 325,787, down 17 percent compared with the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, combined shipments totaled 5,363,199, a 6 percent drop compared with the same period last year.

Heat pump shipments for October totaled 123,170, up 5 percent from the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, heat pump shipments totaled 1,673,307, a 0.7 percent jump compared with the same period last year.

U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in October totaled 217,914, a 20.4 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 7,116, a 31.2 percent drop compared with October 2007 totals. For the year-to-date, gas furnace shipments totaled 1.9 million, a 17.7 percent drop compared with the same period last year. Oil furnace shipments for the year-to-date totaled 48,019, a 28.1 percent drop compared with the same period last year.

Residential electric water heater shipments for October totaled 332,468, a 1.1 percent drop from the same month a year ago. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 287,976, an 8.7 percent decrease compared with shipments for the same month last year. For the year-to-date, about 3.4 million residential gas water heaters have been shipped, a 5.8 percent drop compared with the same period a year ago.  For the year-to-date, about 3.6 million residential electric storage water heaters have been shipped, a 2.2 percent drop compared to the same period last year.

Commercial gas water heater shipments for October totaled 6,071, dropping 21 percent compared with the same month last year, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 5,374, a 12.2 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, commercial electric water heater shipments (59,550) are 6.3 percent ahead of total shipments of this product during the same period last year (55,999). Commercial gas water heater shipments (77,173) for the year-to-date are up 4.7 percent, compared with the same period a year ago (73,676).

A total of 37,355 vent-free room heaters were shipped in October, a 2.3 percent drop compared with the same month last year (38,236). For the year-to-date, 219,647 units have been shipped, a 2.3 percent drop compared with the same period last year (224,773).

October gas logs and insert product shipments totaled 19,782, an 11.3 percent drop compared with the same month last year. For the year-to-date, 166,212 gas logs and inserts have been shipped, a 14.4 percent drop compared to the same period last year. Gas fireplace shipments for October totaled 5,741, a 30.5 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
