Nate Scott was appointed CEO of Cargas Systems, Lancaster, Pa., succeeding founder Chip Cargas, who continues as chairman of the board, the company announced.

“The Cargas team was well prepared for the change, watching Scott take on more responsibilities while Cargas gradually dialed back his level of involvement during the past four years,” according to a Jan. 17 company statement. Employees were told of Scott’s appointment in a meeting in December, the company said. The appointment was officially approved at a November 2017 board meeting.

“Cargas has been preparing for this transition since he turned 50 years old, when he realized he wanted to keep the company going as long as possible for employees and customers,” the statement noted. Cargas launched an ownership transition at that time, gradually reducing his stock ownership percentage so employees could buy in to the company. With the help of the board of directors, Cargas also laid the framework for a sustainable growth strategy and leadership succession plan, the company said.

Scott joined the company as a sales consultant in 2005, went on to manage the sales and marketing team and, in 2012, when the company launched a separate business unit devoted to its proprietary software, Cargas Energy, Scott became vice president. Scott became president in September 2015.

In his new role, Scott intends to maintain a focus on culture, particularly scaling it to fit the growing Cargas team, now more than 100 employees. Strategically, he is focused on expanding the company’s resale offerings and identifying new opportunities for its proprietary products.

“Facilitating more innovation, helping our team achieve success, and reducing roadblocks—that’s really what I’m focused on,” Scott said.

In conjunction with his role as chairman, Cargas will act as an advisor, help sustain the company culture, and lead community engagement initiatives.

“I’m glad Chip’s not going anywhere anytime soon,” Scott said. “I’ve been really lucky to be able to tap into Chip’s experiences, wisdom, and talents over the years. I feel very fortunate coming into a role where such an awesome foundation has been laid.”

As an employee-owned business software and consulting company, Cargas, established in 1988, specializes in Intacct® cloud accounting, Microsoft Dynamic®, custom software solutions, and Cargas Energy mobile and back office software for fuel delivery companies.
