Shipley Energy, York, Pennsylvania, is partnering with HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, to establish the Shipley Energy CDL Scholarship Fund.

The partnership is designed to help meet the needs of students entering a career in transportation and to bring awareness to the transportation industry, Shipley Energy said in announcing the scholarship fund. The demand for CDL drivers is very high and there are no federal student loans or financial aid to assist CDL students, the company said. Shipley Energy said the purpose of the scholarship is to help reduce the barrier of entry for students in need of financial assistance. The American Trucking Association estimates there are approximately 60,000 driver jobs currently open, Shipley Energy said, and that figure is likely to top 100,000 in a few years.

On May 9, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., HACC, at the Harrisburg Campus, will be hosting Shipley Energy Day to recognize this new partnership. This event is open to the public and Shipley Energy team members and vehicles will be on-site.

“Partnering with HACC allows us to help address the driver shortage in our own backyard and provides an opportunity for those that want to have a sustainable career in the transportation workforce,” said Janet Kope, recruiting specialist at Shipley Energy.

HACC’s CDL program enrolls over 100 students annually. HACC has the ability to train in CDL Class A, B, and customized training for companies and students in the transportation industry. We are grateful to Shipley Energy for establishing this scholarship to help students with financial need to take part in the CDL practice test.

“With nearly 200 vehicles in our fleet, we understand the importance of attracting highly-trained commercial vehicle drivers,” said Dan Santillo, vice president of operations for Shipley Energy.  “HACC is able to provide the high-quality education and training for CDL students, and we are proud to support their efforts.”

The Shipley Energy CDL Scholarship Fund will benefit students enrolled in the CDL program at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus. Students must be at least 21 years old at the time of application to the program. The funds may be used for tuition, fees, books and/or program expenses. Eligible students can apply for the scholarship at www.hacc.edu/scholarships.
