NPN MarketFacts 2008 Now Available

Fewer U.S. Gas Stations Close in 2008 Than Previous Year


Although gas station owners are reeling under high fuel costs and lower margins, the impact has yet to show in station closings

According to NPN MarketFacts 2008, the annual station count dropped by slightly over 2,500 from last year’s count bringing this year’s total to 161,768. This is in line with the continued but increased consolidation in the industry in the past year. ‘Although current market pressures, such as the high price of gasoline and inflation, are negatively impacting industry profits and sales, so far the impact is not being felt notably on the ground,” says Keith Reid, NPN Magazine’s editor-in-chief. ‘Anecdotal evidence suggests that the 2009 count may show more impact.”



NPN MarketFacts 2008 also revealed that ExxonMobil maintained its No. 1 position in total gasoline sales in the United States. The company reported that it sold over 24.5 billion gallons of gasoline, a relatively small growth in 2007 of .2 percent. Royal Dutch Shell continued to stay in the top spot for total amount of assets in 2007.
