LIHEAP Action Day
The National Energy & Fuels Institute and the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association were among industry groups that participated in LIHEAP Action Day in Washington, D.C.
The National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC), which organizes the annual event, said on its website that the one-day lobbying effort on March 4 resulted in 264 meetings on the Hill (49 Senate meetings and 264 House meetings), with 41 states and the District of Columbia participating; more than 260 people attended. LIHEAP is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
NEFI, a sponsor of the event, reported in its March 11 newsletter that the Institute’s president and CEO, Jim Collura, and its manager of government affairs, Liam Dotson, met with congressional offices from Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, and New York. CEMA’s director of legislative affairs and member services, Nickey Kollie, met with congressional offices from Connecticut, noted the newsletter, NEFI Online Energy News (NEON). “Together with other stakeholders from around the country, we presented a united front in the fight to preserve funding for the program,” the newsletter reported. “The urgency of this year’s advocacy is amplified by the expectation that President Trump will propose to zero out LIHEAP funding, as he did during his previous administration,” reported the newsletter. “Elimination of federal LIHEAP funding to states would have severe repercussions for vulnerable households relying on the program for energy security.”
