Roth Expansion Kit Wins a Variance in Vermont

Vermont’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) granted a formal variance for Roth double-wall tanks, allowing multiple tanks to be installed side by side using a Roth expansion kit without requiring a separate fill pipe for each tank, reported The Montpelier Mix, a newsletter for Vermont’s HVAC contractors and equipment suppliers.

An industry group, Heating & Cooling Contractors of Vermont (HCCV), had urged the DEC to grant the variance. “DEC determined that the expansion kit evenly distributes fuel across all tanks, preventing over-pressurization and addressing a common safety concern with conventional manifolded systems,” the newsletter reported in its Feb. 9 issue. The newsletter noted that the variance applies only to the fill-pipe requirement; all other AST rules remain in effect, and specific installation conditions must be met, including indoor installation and individual vent alarms.
